Social Media and Society

Over the last few years, social media has taken the world by storm. So much so, that many people are now putting their lives up for the world to see and share in.

Here's a list of active users on eighteen social media networks as of October 19, 2020, as reported by Statistica.

The world has gone crazy on social media and I'm one of them. I enjoy social media and interacting with folks from all over the globe. It's a great way to stay in constant touch with my kids and watch what they're getting up to. That said, there's a lot on that list that I'd never heard of or used, and it's not a complete list either, as one glaringly obvious omission in the list is LinkedIn and other work-related social media sites.

Though I have heard of many social media platforms, there are only three that I use regularly. These include Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

I use Facebook for general entertainment and to stay in touch with personal friends and family. I find it to be particularly useful, providing online friendships are limited to people that are known in real life, rather than just anyone who seeks to join your friend's list. It is also where I tend to first go for breaking news by subscribing to news updates from mainstream media outlets. I also share links to my published articles on Facebook using a public share, which consistently results in generating hundreds of views for my work.

LinkedIn is my choice of platform for anything work-related. I have found it to be an incredibly useful resource and have even enjoyed one-on-one conversations with well-known personalities like Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft) through LinkedIn's private messaging system. It is also my choice of platform to keep an eye out for employment opportunities. Similar to Facebook, I'll also share links to technical articles that I've written and had published, as well as self-publishing several articles that I've written on a variety of non-technical topics.

I find YouTube useful for both learning and entertainment alike. Videos can be found on just about any topic imaginable, and most recently, I have used the resources available to research assignments for my university course. The ability to comment on most videos allows public viewers to share their thoughts about the topic's video content covers.
